Information about our upcoming Habitat for Humanity day

Our council will be volunteering (up to 10 people) on Saturday, October 26th from 8:30am-3:30pm. We’re looking for volunteers (council members given preferred status) who can commit to the entire 7 hours. We’re tentatively scheduled (as of early Sept) on interior framing on one house, but that may change as the date gets closer.

I’m attaching an FAQ document from Habitat (see link below), but here are some highlights:

Construction Volunteer FAQ Maple Hill

  • The project is called “Maple Hill” and is located at 9000 Emory Grove Rd, Gaithersburg, MD, but parking is on Strawberry Knoll Road due to lack of space on-site. The walk can be up to .5 mile or 10 minutes, so plan accordingly to arrive on time (8:30am) for briefing, safety orientation and prep.
  • You don’t need special skills, but if you have them, make them known in case they’re needed. No need to bring any tools either, unless you have a favorite toolbelt, hammer, etc. They will provide what we need including gloves, masks, and protective eye wear, and they ask that we don’t bring any power tools.
  • Wear clothes that can get dirty and wear proper shoes (hard-soled boots/shoes. Sneakers are OK). The reason for the shoes is potential for stepping on nails or something sharp. No sandals or open toe shoes
  • You MUST wear long pants made of heavy material (jeans). It’s not a fashion show…we’re there to work!
  • Lunch is at 11:30am and we are responsible for feeding our own group. HFH does not provide us lunch. Try to bring your own water bottle for the day.
  • Each volunteer must sign a waiver, and we should try to complete these before arriving to speed things up.

It’s going to be an exciting day, and as the Community Director, I’m looking to sign up more than 10 volunteers in the event some can’t do a whole day or need to back out. Right now we’re at about 10, but I want more volunteers!

Fraternally,

Mike
Community/Communications Director
